Masking Together: Million Mask Canadian Challenge
I’m Dr. Elaine Chin, Founder and Medical Director of Executive Health Centre. Together, with my medical device supplier, Xthetica, founded by my long-time friend Manny Kapur, we are on a mission to access and distribute much needed respirator masks of the N95 quality to Canadian frontline workers and at-risk patients.

The world is facing a shortage of masks and other protective equipment against COVID-19. Respirator masks are especially in demand. We must get these specialty masks to those who need them now. Presently, the N95 masks are in short supply and we have access to European FFP2 masks, which are equal in efficacy.
Procurement and approval of these FFP2 masks are pending completion of provincial and federal review. Timeline is undetermined at this time.
However, we need to act NOW to make these masks accessible by removing all barriers.
Xthetica has paid for a large shipment of FFP2 masks from their counterpart, in Spain. This Spanish group has been importing FFP2 masks from China and supplying them to the Spanish, UK and Russian governments and this list is increasing every day.
In the United States, respirators must meet NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) standards. Within this standard, there are several classes of respirators depending on the degree of oil resistance.
Class N: no oil resistance. A distinction is made between N95, N99 and N100. The number after the letter indicates the percentage of filtration of suspended particles.
In Europe, they must meet the European standard EN 149: 2001
FFP2: These masks have a minimum of 94% filtration percentage and maximum 8% leakage to the inside. They are mainly used in construction, agriculture, and by healthcare professionals against influenza viruses. They are currently used for protection against the coronavirus.
We have just become aware that the US government will now accept FFP2 masks by their procurement team. Pending is paperwork that has been filed by many manufacturers of FFP2 masks.
